Four
Temple
Sanctum
We search for the Sanctum within the four-sided Temple of Self. Four is the magic number of completion. The Sanctum represents the complete understanding of our spiritual purpose and a realization of our highest self. This is our search and our destiny.
The heart of the world was a huge emerald with a serpent and an eagle engraved upon it. This stone was the symbol for the Temple. The serpent and bird symbolized the Feathered Serpent. The Feathered Serpent, Quetzalcoatl, built four temples, each facing a different cardinal direction. The eastern temple was built entirely of turquoise. The southern temple was built of pink seashells. The western temple was built of white seashells. The northern temple was built of precious blue-green quetzal feathers. These four temples represented the quarters of the world. Each segment harmonized and aligned the seeker with cosmic forces.
Each temple taught an aspect of the bearing of Venus to the sun. Temple taught how these celestial phenomena correlated to life on earth. From these correlations came a system of divination and structure that formed harmonious cultures. Our age is the embodiment of all four previous Suns, and as such, we have invented time. But time as we know it will end with the coming of the next Sun.
Temple represents the impulse to seek a spiritual path. Jaguar guardians stand at the door hidden within invisible planes. Quail dart and whirl in the courtyard. A floppy-eared rabbit races by. A pursuing coyote soon follows. Quetzal birds preen themselves on the limb of a lush tree. A tapir in procession with a peccary saunter toward a flowering bush. Four eagles sour on wind currents and give shrill cries. A sleek puma traipses through the dense foliage and disappears out of sight. A dove coos and an owl hoots a throaty woo. An elegant blue heron pecks open a shellfish and in a lily-covered sacred pond, a silver fish jumps in the air and makes a splash.
The temple breathes. It is a living entity. It teaches of the coming ages. Inside the Feathered Serpents temple are masses of flowers, feathered hangings and mosaics of precious stones. Whatever temple Quetzalcoatl visits, the air is filled with sweet perfume that delights the senses. All manner of singing birds keep him company.
Temple points to our place of origin. Temple is a world within worlds. A Temple networks with every other Temple. A temple in Guatemala connects with an Earth temple in Ohio. All temples are related energetically. There are temples of every size and description. There are sacred earth mounds which were temples. Some Temples are ancient and falling to ruin, with twisting vines growing over their broken faces. Others glint in the sun and are built of solid marble. Of the known Temples, Temple of the Sun and Temple of the Moon are the most famous. Then there is the Temple of the Jaguars and Temple of the Magicians, the Temple of Warriors and Venus Observatories, and so on. There are many thousands of temples. These monuments all have one thing in common. Contained within their sacred geometry is a secret place that takes on into the deepest reaches of the human spirit. This hidden place is called the Sanctum.
Temple graces the ages. The Temple path to the Sanctum is so simple and clear that it cant be seen. Normal mind perceives many intricate paths and therefore no path. We say there is no Sanctum. The Sanctum has vanished or never existed at all. There is no Temple. Temple is a dead monument of a forgotten time and Sanctum is an absurd myth.
Yet many people are playing the Temple game, seeking the most sacred Temple of all and trying to find its Sanctum. Teachers often instruct one that the search for the mystical Temple with its hidden Sanctum is like being at the threshold of a great maze. The maze reminds us that our courage is our best friend and fear is our worst enemy.
Inside the maze we encounter every sort of trap. We twist and turn and go down blind corridors only to hit a stone wall. No matter the obstacles, we must continue. One day we discover that he Temple is as close as our breath. Truly the Temple and its hidden mysteries were and always will be. You have visited the Temple Sanctum many times. You simply did not recognize it.
All games have rules. The first rule of the Temple game is that you must win or lose before you can quit playing. You must find the Sanctum or die trying. There can be no cheating in the Temple game. You cant claim the powers of the Sanctum unless you have them. Some players give up and try to return to where they started, but this is impossible. Some players find the Sanctum without any effort while others struggle to no avail.
You may think you have withdrawn from the game only to realize it was a time-out. Play or be caught forever in the maze. Judge yourself in relation to other players and you are utterly lost. The more convinced you are of winning, the more ensnared you become within the twisting corridors and the false avenues of the maze.
If you have drawn the Temple Card, you have been given a map to the Sanctum. The map directs you to the topmost part of the Temple, a place with seven doors. There you discover the true entrance. You squeeze inside to find utter darkness. Crawling, you make your way along a narrow, uncomfortable tunnel. It curves subtly this way and that way and it becomes very disorientating. In the midst of your confusion you see a green glow - a light at the end of the tunnel. Getting there, you realize that you have entered the Sanctum.
Dwelling within the Sanctum of Sanctums is a jewel glowing with green light - the heart representing a sacrifice of flowers. It is the green sun, the modeler of our creation. One cannot gaze upon this jewel without obtaining wisdom. The walls are lined with goddesses and gods bathed in the green light. These sacred old ones appear to be alive. There are many colorful paper headdresses striped with rubber and removed only for sacred ceremony in deep woods, at the top of the mountains, in secret caves and near sacred cenotes. There are holy books and ephemera.
Each year, the Serpent-That-Falls-Downward, the ancestral rattle snake, descends along the edges of the Temple steps reminding us of the Great-Power-From-Above originating from the Shaking-Tail-Of-Stars.
The energy and power of the Temple is not a myth but a living reality. The diving god is coming to your aid now. The spiritual master is bringing you secret knowledge that has been lost to the ages, which can be put to work immediately. The flying serpent brings the power to give you wisdom and protect you from evil. It brings extra-perceptional powers to see what is needed in your situation. In the days to come, reach for the highest and give each project your best shot.
Temple Card suggests that you may have to search for the divinatory meaning in concurrent events that are relevant to you. Stated in another way, an event happening far away is just as important to you as what is right in front of you.
Temple Card signifies a divine space. What you seek is near at hand.
There is a power, a non-personal presence.
This presence is not a thing to be named.
Temples are built on a cosmic model. This unnamable presence is the reason temples are built. It is for this - the unspeakable - we seek.
The Sanctum is the home of this sacred un-thing.
